Use Scoreboards and Organizational Rollups
Use this article to assemble scoreboards and to aggregate statistics across teams and units correctly.
How Scoreboards and Rollups Work
- Scoreboards group related operational statistics.
- Statistics should have owners and compatible reporting periods.
- Organizational rollups summarize data across teams, departments, divisions, subsidiaries, or other configured units.
- Rollups must preserve source lineage.
- Aggregation methods must match the statistic type.
- Ratios and percentages should generally be recalculated from their component values rather than averaged blindly.
- Users only see data permitted by their organizational scope and role.
Choosing an Aggregation Method
Counts and amounts usually sum. Rates, ratios, and percentages usually need to be recomputed from numerator and denominator totals. Averaging an average across units of different size produces a number that belongs to no one.
Point-in-time measures, such as an open backlog, are not additive across overlapping periods. Decide whether a rollup should show the latest value, the period end value, or a sum, and record that decision with the statistic.
Important: Preserve Lineage
A rolled-up value should always be traceable to its component statistics and their sources. If a number cannot be traced, it cannot be defended in a review.
Troubleshooting
- Missing values in a rollup.
- Check whether every contributing unit reported for the period, and whether the statistic defines behavior for missing values.
- Incompatible periods.
- Align the reporting periods of contributing statistics before aggregating, or roll up to the coarsest common period.
- Incorrect aggregation.
- Confirm the aggregation method matches the statistic type, and recalculate ratios from component values instead of averaging them.
- Stale connector data.
- Review source freshness for each contributing source before acting on the aggregate.
- Missing organizational assignments.
- Verify each statistic is assigned to the organizational unit it belongs to; unassigned statistics cannot roll up.
- Permission-limited results.
- A viewer may see a smaller total than an administrator. Compare totals using the same role and organizational scope.
